What digital marketing actually is

If you've never worked in marketing, here's the honest starting point: digital marketing is the modern version of something businesses have always done — telling the right people about something they might want, in a place they'll actually see it. "Digital" just means that place is now a phone screen instead of a billboard or a newspaper ad.

What it actually looks like, day to day: A small business owner posts a photo on Instagram (social media marketing). They pay Google to show up first when someone searches "meal delivery near me" (paid search). They write a blog post that helps their site get found in search results without paying for an ad (SEO). They send a weekly email to past customers (email marketing). All four are "digital marketing." None work well alone — that's the entire reason this course exists.

Why businesses bother with any of this: Customers don't wander into a store by accident anymore. Someone deciding what to eat or who to hire almost always starts on a phone, searching or scrolling, before contacting a business directly. If a business isn't visible in that search or scroll, it's invisible to a huge share of potential customers.

The four channels this course covers: • Content and social media — what you post, and why, beyond just "staying active" • SEO (search) — showing up when someone searches for what you offer, without paying per click • Paid ads — paying to show up immediately, instead of waiting for rankings to build • Measurement — figuring out whether any of it is actually working, using real numbers

Why "strategy" comes before any of these four: A strategy is a plan for who you're talking to and what you want them to do — decided before you post anything or run any ad. Skipping this is the most common beginner mistake, a little like writing a letter before deciding who's supposed to read it.

What you'll be able to do by the end of this course: Take a real (or realistic) small business, figure out who its best customers actually are, build a simple 30-day plan across these four channels, and read basic performance numbers well enough to know if the plan is working.
